Advent week #1 – The Candle of Hope
In the hustle and bustle of the season, I’m sure the message of Jesus’ birth is in there somewhere. It can get so busy, filled with seasonal chores. There is baking to do, decorating, gatherings and such. Our calendar fills up to overflowing. Each year, the season begins to flutter with anticipation. It starts around Thanksgiving and then goes full speed ahead until we hit December 25th. We count the days, knowing the very day that Christmas arrives. However, it wasn’t so precise and planned out for generations before Christ’s birth. Their wait was for many generations and the Prophet Isaiah said that they had to look for “a sign”.
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14
There was so much to look forward to as they waited for a sign. They hoped in the birth of the Messiah, because the occasion would mark the beginning of promised peace and salvation. Jesus was born and he did bring peace, hope and salvation to all who received him. People experienced the very power of God in their life while he walked as a man on earth.
His time on earth was not the end of the amazing hope he offers. As we grow closer to the very day when we celebrate his birth, we have the hope of Christ in us. He is our glorious hope. [Collosians 1:27] Take time to push aside the seasonal whirlwind. Let him know that you are looking for a sign of his coming, in your life. During this Christmas season, experience him in your heart. Light the first candle of Advent with hope that you may experience him in a deeper way than you ever have before. As we invite him, he is the hope of glory, that brings peace and salvation to us today.
